SCANNING

PHOTOS SLIDES AND NEGATIVES

We scan your prints, film negatives or slides. If you have heirloom glass plate negatives we can even arrange scanning of those. Photos are scanned directly from albums when possible. If necessary, we carefully remove the prints from albums or frames, and restore the album or framing after scanning.

DOCUMENTS

We can also scan important documents. Scanning is possible for recipes, certificates or awards, newspaper clippings, birth announcements, wedding invitations, letters, a diary, poems or guestbook as well as children’s schoolwork or artwork.  Large items like artwork can be photographed if too large for scanning.

LABELING

As your digital collection grows a label system is important to find photos when needed. When scanning we can transfer all relevant text about your photos directly into the image files (data files) to help future generations appreciate the images and understand the context. Examples would be captions in your photo album or scribbles behind the photos, as well as additional information you submit handwritten on post-it notes or typed.

Information that you might consider includes who is in the photos, what was the occasion, when and where was it taken, who took the photo, who will keep the original prints etc. If your photos are very old and there are very few people are alive who can remember details about the photos you might consider gathering a few people who can give you additional information. Time spent showing them photos this can be very meaningful, pleasant and productive! We remember best when there is a small group to help each other. It opens up the file folders in the mind.

To submit captions or labels insert post-it notes with text that you want included in the image files.  Even better is if you type up the information that you want us to include with the digital collection. We can clip and paste, working faster.

What are the advantages of scanning?

SCANNING SAVES SPACE

The finished result is electronic files that can be fit into a small little memory stick about the size of your thumb. Imagine shelves and shelves of photo albums, boxes and boxes of letters and recipes all transformed into a little stick your can easily store.

IMPROVED QUALITY and DURABILITY

Your photographs are fading. In the scanning process colors can be restored, dust and scratches can be removed.

SECURITY

You can store your entire collection of photographs and documents in a bank vault or fireproof safe.

EASE OF SHARING

You can easily give everybody in the family the whole collection, including all of your grandchildren. Give your grandchildren a historic record they will use when they want to learn more about their family history. Your grandchildren may even offer to make YouTube films or photobooks for you!

 HISTORICAL VALUE

Written documentation will help future genealogists. If you are emptying a house and need to divide documents to multiple locations, or if you don’t have room to store documents and concerned that you have to throw them away, consider investing in scanning as a way to retain the historical record of your family.

Scanning Details

We scan at high resolution which takes longer but gives a better result so that they can be utilized for your book, slideshows or other photo projects.  Photos and negatives will be scanned as .jpg files. Documents will be scanned as .pdf files or .jpg files depending on if they are going to be incorporated into your book

Privacy

Your photos and documents are important and personal we will respect your privacy concerns. Your documents will be stored in a sealed container when not being scanned. Any material you send to us is returned to you along with finished data files. We keep copies on our computer only as long as it takes to get your projects finished.  When the work is done to your satisfaction all copies are deleted.

If requested we can bring the equipment to your home and do the scanning there. There is an additional charge for travel and overnight expenses.

Delivery

Your originals (prints, documents etc) will be returned and your new digital files will be delivered to you in a manner that fits your needs. Your files (.jpg for photos and .pdf  or .jpg for documents) can be delivered on a new purchased USB memory stick, CD, DVD, or uploaded to your family website or ftp site. We can also deliver them via your DropBox account. Additional back-up copies can be ordered for your bank vault and grandchildren if you wish.

Price

We charge an hourly rate for scanning services. Scanning a lifetime of photos and documents is time consuming but it is a one time expense. Consider sharing the cost with other family members.

If your budget is limited we can discuss ways to keep cost down. You may choose to limit the number of photos being scanned to only a selection of your best photos. Make this selection before you give us your box or album. Review your material and using post-it notes mark which photos are important for scanning and which pages we should skip over. Mark the pages with post-it notes. If you don’t have time to pre-select photos we can scan whole albums. Other ways to reduce total time and expense: We can limit photo correction and labeling efforts being done, use lower resolution let you do labeling on your own computer. We can set up a system and teach you how to do this.

You will be given an estimate. If it is an extensive project you will be given progress reports if requested.

Some post-processing of images is needed to correct and crop images. Restoration is highly recommended to improve the finished quality of your book.
